The Importance of Learning Torah

Torah study is the heartbeat of Jewish life. Our Sages teach that it stands above all other mitzvot, because learning brings us to know Hashem’s will and to live by it.

01 / Equal to them all

The study of Torah outweighs them all

The Mishnah lists great mitzvot — honoring parents, acts of kindness, bringing peace between people — and concludes that Torah study is equal to them all. Learning is the root from which every other mitzvah grows.

וְתַלְמוּד תּוֹרָה כְּנֶגֶד כֻּלָּם

“And the study of Torah is equal to them all.”

02 / Day and night

A lifelong commandment

Hashem commanded Yehoshua that the words of Torah should never leave his mouth. Torah is not a subject studied once, but a lifelong companion, learned by day and by night.

לֹא יָמוּשׁ סֵפֶר הַתּוֹרָה הַזֶּה מִפִּיךָ וְהָגִיתָ בּוֹ יוֹמָם וָלַיְלָה

“This book of the Torah shall not depart from your mouth; you shall meditate on it day and night.”

03 / A pillar of the world

The world stands on Torah

Shimon HaTzaddik taught that the whole world rests on three pillars, and Torah is the first of them. Every hour of learning strengthens the foundation on which the world stands.

עַל שְׁלשָׁה דְבָרִים הָעוֹלָם עוֹמֵד, עַל הַתּוֹרָה וְעַל הָעֲבוֹדָה וְעַל גְּמִילוּת חֲסָדִים

“The world stands on three things: on Torah, on service, and on acts of loving-kindness.”

04 / Learning that leads to action

Study is great, for it leads to deeds

When the Sages asked which is greater, study or action, they concluded that study is greater — because it leads to action. Torah learning shapes homes, communities and generations.

“Study is greater, for study leads to action.”

05 / Partners in Torah

Those who support learning share in it

Not everyone can sit in the study hall all day. Jewish law teaches that one who supports others in their learning becomes a partner in that Torah. When you sustain the kollel, every page learned in Karmiel carries your share.

Every person is obligated to study Torah — and one who cannot study himself may support others who learn.
Shulchan Arukh, Yoreh De’ah 246:1 · paraphrased ↗
